Urban Underscore:
Narcissism

Installation, User Experience

Background

Narcissism refers to the obsession and admiration of oneself. As the digital age quickly made its transition, a photo can simply be taken by a click of a button today. With the widespread use of social media and more affordable mobile devices, users are often encouraged to share their photographs online. This led to a social norm for anyone to take self-portraits or "selfies". Our social media feeds are becoming increasingly diluted with the innumerable uploading of selfies.

The Artefact

This artefact questions the purpose of taking selfies and posting them on social media. More often than not, we are more concerned of how presentable we look in our selfies online than the concern of other postings. Everyone focus on himself or herself only while not paying enough attention to others anymore. The artefact attempts to probe if our narcissistic tendencies are gradually leading to a meaningless ritual of self-worshipping.
